How often does a power cut occur

Some years ago the Institute of Electrical Engineering estimated that on average  we all experience one power cut per year. This is a very course figure because some areas are more susceptible than others, and protecting against power cuts often has a greater or less priority depending on what is actually experienced by the end user.

What is certain is that power consumption is increasing year on year, for example more houses are being built, more buildings have air conditioning etc. and mains supply is therefore always playing catch-up. The situation for power cut frequency is fluid, and can change from area to area almost without warning.

In recent times there has also been instances of power station overload. New York State was the most publicised, but there have been similar but less serious events in London, and Italy.

The situation in New York was caused by an unexpected power station shut down at the time when some other power stations were closed for overhaul. This shut down caused neighbouring working power stations to become overloaded and because of this they automatically shut themselves down. Power stations throughout Utah and New York state then shut down like falling dominoes causing a major blackout.

With many power stations operating at near capacity, this is a scenario which could happen again.
