FAQs > Generators
How large does the generator need to be?
In power terms, at least 1.5 x the size of the UPS for 'on-line' technology, and at least
5 x the size of the UPS for 'line interactive' technology.
Can I use a generator without a UPS
Yes, particularly for non critical computer systems. The main disadvantage is the time gap between power fail, and generator start-up
causes the computer systems to re-boot.
There
is also another gap in power supply when returning to mains. This
second gap in power supply can be eliminated using a syncronisation system
whereby the generator synchronises with the mains before switchover using
a make-before-break switching system.
Where should the generator be sited?
It is best to position it as close as possible to the UPS to reduce cabling costs. Out-doors provides the best siting, because of the noise and exhaust. A generator can
also be sited within a building
housed in a block room with sound attenuators fitted into the walls, and an exhaust duct to
the outside.
